Traveling to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) - a step-by-step guide to entry

  • As of 4/29/23, inbound travelers to China may choose to take an antigen test up to 48 hours prior to boarding. Airlines will no longer check pre-departure results, and negative test results will instead need to be declared upon arrival to China Customs by completing the Health Declaration form on Wechat mini-program of China Customs, via the China Customs App, or at https://htdecl.chinaport.gov.cn/htdeclweb/home/pages/index/index.html.

Traveling to the People’s Republic of China (PRC)

  • Linked here are the Covid requirements from the State Department, U.S. Embassy and Consulate in China,  and Embassy of the PRC in the U.S.  

  • Check with the PRC Embassy in the United States for the most updated information on travel to the PRC. 

    • Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT)

      • Travelers are required to take a nucleic acid amplification test (ex: PCR) within 48 hours before flight departure, and can only take the flight when the test result is negative.

      • A hard copy of the test result is required to be shown See 4/29/23 update at top of page.

    • Health Code (declaration of health)

      • Travelers are no longer required to obtain a health code from the Chinese Embassy or Consulates General in the US before departure.

    • Health Declaration to China Customs

    • Entry Inspection

      • For those with normal test results and a normal health declaration, there will be no additional testing or quarantine when entering China. In cases of a positive test result or any symptoms such (ie: fever) detected by China Customs, travelers will take an antigen test. Those who test positive on the test will need to self-quarantine.

  • Incoming travelers will have their temperature taken via scanner upon arrival in the PRC. If a fever is indicated, then an antigen test will be run.

  • Currently there is no requirement for quarantine upon arrival but that can change quickly in the PRC. Continue to monitor the state department website for up to date information prior to your departure.

Traveling to Hong Kong (SAR - Special Administrative Region)

  • Monitor the Government of Hong Kong SAR Corona Virus website for ongoing updates.

  • All pre-departure and post-arrival quarantine and testing requirements have been removed as of 4/1/23

    • All people must pass a temperature check upon arrival and if you are having symptoms, will be passed onto the Department of Health for next steps.

    • The government recommends daily RAT tests for the first 5 days after arrival and these results can be voluntarily uploaded to the Electronic COVID-19 Monitoring & Surveillance System (eCMSS).

Traveling to Macau (SAR - Special Administrative Region)

  • Monitor the Macau Tourism Government Office website for the ongoing updates.

  • All pre-departure and post-arrival quarantine and testing requirements have been removed as of 4/3/23.

Returning to the United States from China:

  • Monitor the CDC website for ongoing updates.

  • No testing is required for return entry to the United States as of 3/10/23.
